Volunteer Guidelines

Application Process

Associated Early Care and Education accepts applications from men and women aged 15 and older. Each prospective volunteer is screened by the Human Resources Specialist, Department Head or Program Director. The volunteer applicant must have a background free of conduct which bears adversely upon his or her ability to provide for the safety and well being of children. Prospective volunteers must list two character references on their application. These references will be contacted for verification.

Before beginning a volunteer assignment the volunteer must completely fill out the volunteer application including:

  • Consent for request to conduct a CORI/DSS background check
  • Sign child abuse and neglect form
  • Complete Health Examination form

Attendance

Volunteers unable to serve on a specific date are asked to give at least two days notice, if possible. Vacations and resignations should be reported at least two weeks in advance.

Commitment

Volunteers are required to commit their services for the duration of a specific event or on an on-going basis for a period of at least two months. In building relationships with children it is important that classroom support is reliable and consistent. Therefore, volunteers in the classrooms are asked to schedule their service time on a regular and reliable basis.

Communication

Open communication is welcome. Volunteers' ideas and suggestions are invited and encouraged and should be directed to their Supervisor, Program Director or the Human Resources Specialist.

Confidentiality

Information regarding clients and employees is to be kept confidential. It is mandatory that all information be held in the strictest confidence.

Evaluation

Evaluations will be conducted at two-month, six-month and one year intervals for all volunteers.

Orientation/Training

All volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation session. Specific training will be provided by program staff where the volunteer is assigned.

Professionalism

A volunteer's attitude toward work needs to be professional. Volunteers are asked to make a commitment to the assigned work, to those who direct the program, and to our clients.

Smoking

All of Associated Early Care and Education offices and programs are smoke-free.

Tax Deductions

Income tax deductions may be available for volunteers. Call the IRS or your personal accountant for specific information on what deductions may be available for volunteers.
